"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The panel has suffered from worm infestation in the past and is fragile with unstable vertical splits with accompanying minor paint loss. There is further fragility to the paint surface in some areas and a few worm holes have found there way to the surface and have needed treatment. The paint in the sky, to the left and right of the Madonna, is abraded and has been strengthened and there is a restored paint loss lower left. There are minor visible discoloured restorations to the figures, especially the Christ child, and losses to the red glaze of the Virgin's robe. The painting is in good untouched condition elsewhere and a significant tonal improvement would be achieved with the removal of the varnish. Offered in an engaged frame."
