"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. The paint layer is raised and unstable with pronounced stretcher marks and possibly reduced on the left hand side. Under U-V light can be seen a scattering of retouchings over the top of an earlier discoloured varnish e.g. to oranges upper right and lower centre, and elsewhere to fruit . The background is slightly abraded in some areas but the opacity of the old varnish over accentuates this. The impasto is well preserved and most of the original glazing is intact. If the discoloured varnish were removed a tonal improvement would be achieved."
