Catalogue Note

The musicians accompanying the hurdy-gurdy player are holding instruments which appear close to spike fiddles, an unusual instrument in Dutch 17th-Century painting which is thought to have originated in Persia. The two instruments in the present painting appear to use pigs' bladders as the resonance box and are being held differently to the way one would usually play a spike fiddle.
