Neapolitan School, 17th Century

Estimate

bidding is closed

Description

  • An extensive capriccio landscape with classical ruins and a fountain and figures in the foreground
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The canvas appears to be unlined, but inspection of the edges is not possible due to the addition of a later wooden backing to the stretcher. The canvas is however stable. There is a localised area of retouchings and restorations to the sky upper right, and also upper left and further retouching throughout the clouds. Some of the figures in the right foreground have been lightly strengthened, and there are some retouchings to the church at the right. The paint surface is on pretty good condition overall but would benefit from a light clean. The varnish is somewhat uneven. Offered in a modern slip frame.
