Condition

Panel is uncradled. This painting appears to have been slightly trimmed along the top and bottom edges, although it is unclear how much. Overall, this picture presents an unusual image as it is unfinished and all the major heads except one are incomplete. Areas where the ground is visible still exhibit quite extensive underdrawing. Some areas of paint loss at left side and at top, as visible in catalogue image. It appears that along the top edge there is a band of varying width, and in the upper left corner and continuing down the left side, where there is a different ground preparation. While the panel is integral in these areas, there must have been damage and a new ground layer was put down over which new paint was applied to complete the image.

Catalogue Note

The present unfinished picture is one of several versions of The Circumcision by Garofalo.  The prime version, now in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 692), was executed by the artist in 1519 for the central portion of the predella of an altarpiece depicting The Massacre of the Innocents, in the Church of San Francesco in Ferrara.  In addition to the Louvre picture, two other autograph versions of The Circumcision by Garofalo are extant.  One is in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore (inv. 37.1077); the other is in a private collection, New York.
