Condition

Very dirty, to be cleaned. Small lacks along the edge of the painting. A scratch on the upper right-hand side. Under ultraviolet light: Some repaints along the edge, mainly in the lower left corner. Fine gilt wood frame, to be restored.

Catalogue Note

Coomans fut tout d'abord connu comme peintre d'histoire. Il fit plusieurs voyages en Italie, en Grèce et en Crimée. En 1857, lors d'un voyage dans le sud italien, il fut frappé par les ruines de Pompéi et sa manière de peindre évolua radicalement. Il exécuta une série de tableaux de genre et de scènes familières évoquant la vie dans l'Antiquité : Les Premiers Pas, Phryné, Glycère, etc., Notre tableau illustre parfaitement cette inspiration antique de l'artiste et s'apparente aux styles néo-grec et néo-pompéien très à la mode en Europe dans les années 1860.
