Catalogue Note
Peintre d'histoire et de batailles parmi les meilleurs de son époque, Jean-Baptiste-Edouard Detaille chercha toujours à reproduire le plus fidèlement possible des personnages historiques et les scènes militaires. Dans la gouache présentée ici, il s'inspire de la composition utilisée par Horace Vernet dans Bataille de Wagram, 6 juillet 1809 (conservée dans la galerie des Batailles à Versailles). Cette composition, où l'on retrouve l'Empereur à cheval entouré de ses soldats et donnant des ordres, fut reprise par Meissonier, également célèbre pour ses tableaux militaires à la gloire de l'Empereur.
