Very good overall condition.
Original canvas that does not lie properly (mainly on the upper part and on the right-hand side) on the stretcher and needs thus a proper tension.
The picture requires a cleaning.
Impressive gilt wooden frame, most probably original.

Few tiny minor repaints on the background.

Catalogue Note
En 1847, Vaines surnomma Rousseau le "Raphaël des lapins". En effet, cet élève de Gros et d'Edouard Bertin se fit connaître grâce à ses paysages et à ses natures mortes très influencées par Chardin, mais ses tableaux mettant en scène des animaux, souvent inspirés par les fables de Florian et de la Fontaine, firent l'unanimité de la critique enthousiasmée par le charme des oeuvres, leur qualité technique et le velouté des pelages. Baudelaire lui-même ne disait-il pas en 1846: "J'ai vu dernièrement, chez Durand Ruel, des canards de Monsieur Rousseau d'une beauté merveilleuse, et qui avaient bien les moeurs et les gestes des canards".
