Catalogue Note

In March of 1851, Thomas Couture received a comission to paint the Chapelle de la Vierge at the church of Saint-Eustache.  On the central wall he painted the Vierge en Gloire and on the side walls he painted Stella Maris (the star of the sea, protector against shipwrecks) and Consolatrix Afflictorum (the consoler of afflictions).  This work is likely one of the first preparatory sketches because it includes numerous variations from the final work.
