Catalogue Note
a copy of "one of the landmarks in arabic studies" (atabey) with a distinguished provenance, from the library of the orientalist louis mathieu langlès, with his annotations.
At the front of volume 1 is an old manuscript note in French stating that this copy was bought at the sale of Langlès's library. The volumes contain his autograph annotations in both French and Arabic, sometimes both together. Langlès (1763-1824) was a noted orientalist, instrumental in the creation of a special school of oriental languages in Paris in 1795, of which he was the professor of Persian, and many years later one of the founders of the Geographical Society of Paris. A prolific writer, he co-operated in the publication of Castellan's Turkey, and edited the 10 volume edition of Chardin's Voyages... en Perse, et autres lieux de l'orient, published in 1811.
