Catalogue Note

rare. Fontanier (1796-1857) became an envoy to the French ambassador at Constantinople in 1833 and from 1833 to 1846 was vice-consul of France to Basra, which enabled him to travel widely in Arabia and Mesopotamia. This present work describes his travels from 1834 to 1839, including accounts of his journey in Egypt, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf (described in more than 12 chapters), Baghdad, Muscat, India and China.
