Catalogue Note

a fine, personal, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his son. The printed author's dedication leaf reads "To his father, as testimony of veneration and affection, the following pages are inscribed, by the author" to which Garston has added below in ink "...and to his son Edgar John this copy is given as a token of affection. March 25 1868 E.G."

An adventurer and philhellene, Garston first visited Greece in 1825 and an extract from his journal of that period is included at the end of volume 2. In 1840 he returned to Greece and the present work gives an account of life in Athens and the islands compared with his impressions in 1825.
