Catalogue Note
The first part of this work is an account of Laurent d'Arvieux's mission to the Arabs of the Carmel region in 1664, together with a general discussion of the customs of the nomadic tribes. The second part, the Descripton générale de l'Arabie, appears for the first time in the French translation by La Roque from the Arabic of Ismael Abulfeda.
D'Arvieux was based in Sidon between 1653-1665. He later served in the French mission at Constantinople and in 1679 was named French consul at Aleppo, where he resided for six years.
