Catalogue Note

Fauvel, Fermanel and Baudouin were from Rouen, Stochove from Belgium, and together they travelled in the Levant in the 1630s, exploring the Greek islands and the coast of Asia Minor. Stochove published an account in 1643 and according to the editor of this work it is based on Stochove's printed account and a manuscript by Fauvel.

The imprint on this 1668 Rouen edition varies - here it is "veuve d'Antoine Ferrand", whereas the Atabey copy was Jacques Herault, and the Aboussouan copy (sale in these room, 17 June 1993, lot 327), Jean Viret. Blackmer suggests that there should be a map in this edition; however his collection only contained a later edition, and the information may be based on Weber, probably an error. Neither the Atabey nor Aboussouan copies contained a map.
