Catalogue Note

Described as 'second edition' on the title, this octavo edition was published in the same year as the folio edition (which Coronelli himself considered to be the first edition). This copy has 42 plates, whereas Contominas calls for 43; however the Kissner copy (sale at Christies, 4 October 1990, lot 677) also had 42 plates, the Gratsos copy (sale in these rooms 27 September 1990, lot 238) had 40 plates and Weber calls for fewer still. As often with Coronelli's publications the composition seems to vary.
