first edition, 2 volumes, 8vo (216 x 128mm.), half-titles, folding engraved chart, 21 engraved plates, directions to binder at end of volume 1, contemporary speckled calf, double gilt fillet borders to sides, flat spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces, old paper library labels to foot of spines, both volumes with gathering A (i.e. contents leaves) misbound within final gathering of each vol., duplicate of vol.1 title (torn) at end of first vol.

a fine copy. Ellis served as surgeon's mate on Cook's third voyage. This work contains the earliest published account of Cook's death, and preceded the official account by two years. "The fine plates are among the earliest published on the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the Northwest." (Hill)
