Catalogue Note

The author regards the voyages of Cook as the model for voyages of discovery and mentions those of Columbus and Bligh. The poem discusses topical issues such as the destruction of natives in the West Indies due to the abuse of commerce and the slave trade. However the author also describes the benefits of voyages, including the advancement in botany, natural history, geography and astronomy.
The word "other" in the title has been crossed out (?as always) in ink and an uknown eighteenth century hand identifies the author as 'Brian Broughton MA / Fellow of New College' [Oxford], (inscribed in ink on the title).
