Description

  • A collection of photographs of Asia. [late 1860s]
66 albumen prints on 64 card mounts, comprising: 4 prints (120 x 95mm., or the reverse) and 62 prints (from 137 x 185mm. to 245 x 345mm.), approximately 6 signed in the negative and one with the date 1868, a few mounts with printed descriptions pasted on verso, some captioned in pencil on the mount, loose within a modern portfolio, one with crease across image, one mount with tears and soiling (not affecting image)

Catalogue Note

Thomson (1837-1921) travelled to the Far East between 1862 and 1872, where he opened a commercial studio in Singapore and Hong Kong. This collection of photographs includes topographical views, interior and exterior views of temples and other buildings mostly in China, Thailand, Japan, Cambodia and Java.
