Catalogue Note

first edition of the author's first african expedition, with one leaf of the exceptionally rare suppressed Appendix IV on female circumcision. This appendix was the only one to be printed in Latin, although it is titled in English: A Brief Description of Certain Peculiar Customs. "Penzer had seen no copy [with the appendix]. It is most probable that only those few copies (possibly not more than 6), for Burton's own private use were ever printed with 'Appendix IV'. Burton's own library... does not contain a copy with Appendix IV." (Spink)
