Catalogue Note

This carefully drawn chart of Saldanha Bay, some 100 kilometres by sea north of Cape Town, is typical of official Dutch work but seems to be superior to all those printed charts produced in the first half of the century. Clearly based on a running survey the hand-drawn chart's consistent error is to exaggerate the size of the islands within the bay but allows for details such as batteries, springs, birch trees, etc.
