Catalogue Note

rare and striking map  of the southern atlantic ocean with the northwestern coasts of Africa and a part of Brazil by the formeost cartographer of the day, appointed first Cartographer to the Dutch East India Company.

This map engraved by Joannes van Deutecom - a member of the family responsible for engraving the majority of maps in late seventeenth century Amsterdam - "is the first to make the detailed knowledge of the Portuguese... in this area available in printed form" (Schilder).

This second state was most likely published by Cornelis Claesz prior to 1609.
