Catalogue Note
A collection of thirteen pamphlets relating to Massachusetts railroads, three illustrated with maps, published between 1829 and 1839, assembled by Daniel Denny, of the Board of Directors of the Boston and Worcester Railroad Corporation. The volume contains two letterpress cuttings from the 1850s referring to Mr. Denny, and a manuscript account of how Mrs. Denny became the first lady in New England to travel by steam-powered train.
The first illustrated tract is Report of Mr. [James F.] Baldwin on The Rail-Road Surveys from Boston to the Hudson River, 1828, containing three folding engraved maps and 3 folding engraved profiles; the two maps from Boston to Albany by Baldwin are not recorded by Modelski but evidently are called for in the report, and these maps are the earliest railroad maps published in america.
