first edition, 4 volumes, folio (538 x 360mm.), engraved title vignettes, 3 portraits (2 of Stuart, one a duplicate, and one of Revett) and 317 plates, plans and maps, some folding or double-page, including one folding hand-coloured map, numerous illustrations in text, errata leaf at end of volume 3, nineteenth-century green half morocco gilt by Upham and Beet, top edges gilt, lacking list of subscribers, vol.4 rather spotted, bindings very slightly rubbed, some joints splitting

Catalogue Note
the first accurate survey of the classical buildings of athens, through the influence of which the Greek style was established in English architecture. Stuart and Revett's visit to Athens was made in 1751 at the instigation of the Society of Dilettanti.
Plate number 29 in volume 2 was never published. The work was completed in 1830 with the publication of a fifth volume (not present here), but due to very lengthy gaps in publication between each volume, sets are frequently found incomplete.
