Catalogue Note
a fine set of these influential travels. Mandelslo and Olearius travelled with the Duke of Holstein-Gotthorp's embassy to the Tsar of Russia and the Shah of Persia, with the purpose of initiating trade relations with Russia, Tartary and Persia. Mandelso left the embassy in Persia and continued on to Surat, Goa and Agras in India. His narrative contains substantial information on the Far East, which he did not himself visit. His letters, which were published after his death, were edited by Olearius. Olearius's account greatly influenced European opinion of Russia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
