Catalogue Note
Rare. We have only traced one edition of music by Matteis at auction during the last ten years (sale in these rooms on 15 December 1999: lot 15).
Nicola Matteis (died c.1707), originally from Naples, was the foremost violinist in England during the Restoration period. His Ayres are among the few editions published expressly for the violin at this time, the start of the serious repertory and popularity of the instrument in England. Matteis's explanatory table gives details of the symbols including the curious notes marked out in dots ("The Pointed Notes...are made for Masters that can Touch two cords for want of a Second Treble").
