Catalogue Note

This is the only early manuscript source for the cantatas of Elisabeth Jacquet and René de Bousset.  Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1665-1729) was one of the foremost women composers, admired by Louis XIV and Titon du Tillet.  Her twelve sacred cantatas were published in 1708 [RISM J 238]: this manuscript  corrects some errors and adds ornamentation. Copies of René de Bousset's cantatas (1735-1740) are recorded only in the Bibliothèque nationale (RISM B3927 & B3928 (one copy only)).  For details of the differences between this manuscript and the editions, see A. Rose, 'A newly-discovered source', in Early Music 36, pp.245-264 . For Titon du Tillet's encomium of Elisabeth Jacquet (1732), please see lot 126.
