Catalogue Note

Gershwin's parents had bought a piano in 1910, intending it for Ira to use, but it was George who soon took command of it.  Jack Miller was a George's fellow pianist at the Beethoven Society Orchestra in 1913, and introduced him to his first important teacher, Charles Hambitzer. See Joan Peyser, The Memory of All That. The Life of George Gershwin (New York, 1993), p.94.
