Catalogue Note

In the absence of any cadenzas by Mozart for K.491, one of his greatest concertos, many composers have attempted their own, including Saint-Saëns, J.N.Hummel, Humperdinck, Carl Reinecke, Brahms, Smetana, and Busoni. Fauré's attempt, notable for its iridescent harmonies (it has a middle section in F sharp major) is less a colourless style pastiche than a wonderfully romantic - in a word, Fauré-esque - hommage à Mozart. An edition of the cadenza, 'fingered and nuanced' by Marguerite Hasselmans (1876-1947), the concert pianist and long-term mistress of Fauré, was published in 1927 by Editions du Magasin Musical Pierre Schneider.
