Catalogue Note
Rare. The first edition of one of the last great Italian opere buffe and Donizetti's final masterpiece. The first edition went on sale on 23 January 1843, dedicated to Zélie de Coussy, Donizetti's tireless benefactress. TNG would appear to be in error in assuming that the opera was first published in Milan: Ricordi's edition dates from the 1850s. We are most grateful to William Crawford for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
