a working manuscript, written in a mixture of full score and short score, notated in mauve and brown inks, some markings in red and blue crayon, some erasures and autograph deletions and corrections, 39 pages, plus blanks, folio (35 x 26.8cm), 24-stave paper, no place or date

This fine working manuscript consists of the following parts: 1] "Prologue", two bifiolia, paginated '1'-'6' [containing 7 pages of music]; [2] "Acte Ier. No. 1", eight bifolia, paginated '1'-'16' [containing 16 pages of music]; [3] ["Acte Ier. No. 2"], two bifolia, paginated '1'-'6' [containing 6 pages of music]; [4] "Acte 4me - No 3 Ballet", two bifolia and a single leaf, paginated '1'-'7' [containing 10 pages of music]

Saint-Saëns's incidental music for the tragedy Déjanire by Louis Gallet was first performed in Béziers in 1898 by a vast orchestra consisting of 110 strings, 18 harps, 25 trumpets and multiple choruses. In 1909-1910 Saint-Saëns reworked his score in to a complete opera, first performed in Monte Carlo on 14 March 1911. From the William Reeves collection.
