Catalogue Note

This would seem to be a hitherto lost source of one of the thirteen symphonic poems. Liszt was the inventor of the term "symphonic poem" and one of the most important exponents of the genre. It dates from 1854 and incorporates material from an earlier Heroic March in the Hungarian Style (1840), written for piano. The work is like an extended Hungarian Rhapsody with a triumphant ending. This manuscript may well have been that used by the young Carl Tausig when he played the two-piano version with Liszt in Weimar in 1856. Liszt published this version in 1861.
