Description

  • Autograph musical quotation signed and dated, ("Frederick Delius 1913 Grez sur Loing, July 3"), comprising two bars, notated in black ink on a hand-drawn stave, probably newly composed, 1 page, 8vo (c.15 x 11.5cms), signed on the verso by the composer's wife Jelka, and inscribed by her with a quotation of 2 lines of text from the "Songs of Sunset", Grez sur Loing, 4 July 1913.
Offenbach. Autograph manuscript of the song "L'Emir du Bengador", signed ("Jacques Offenbach"), notated in black ink for voice and accompaniment on six three-stave systems, with alterations to the words, the accompaniment incomplete, comprising thirty-nine bars of music in all, 2 pages, oblong folio, with the title-leaf inscribed in pencil by another hand, no place or date, tear at hinge repaired; Benda. Receipt signed ("Benda"), for music paper, obtained from the Royal Treasury, annotated by at least two other hands, 1 page, oblong 4to, modern pencil annotations to recto and verso, Gotha, 7 January 1751, browning, a few small stains

The text transcribed by Jelka diverges slightly from that set by Delius: "Here in the [for "thy"] garden through the sighing boughs, Beyond the reach of time and chance and change".    See also Lot 8, Lady Beecham's album.

Rare. Georg Benda, Kapellmeister to Duke Friedrich II of Saxe Gotha between 1750 and 1772, was the most important composer of German operas and melodramas during the mid-eighteenth century, his works being admired by Mozart and influencing the composition of the latter's Zaide and Thamos.
