Catalogue Note

James Cantelo was a member of the Catch Club in London.  He was the brother of the singer Ann Cantelo (1766-1831) and keyboard-player Thomas Cantelo (1774-1807), both well-known musicians in Bath: Ann was a pupil of JC Bach.  See Highfill, Burnim & Langhans, A Biographical Dictionary of Actors, Actresses, Musicians, [etc] in London, 1660-1800. (1975).  Another sister, Bathseba, married a Mr Loder, who ran the concerts at Bath. Jane Austen also mentions in a letter, the "excellent singing" of a Mrs Cantelo Smith  in 1811.
