Catalogue Note
A wonderful German post-fanfare binding, most probably produced as a wedding gift for the owners, JAB and DB, as the quotation on the upper cover, from Genesis 2:18, would be most appropriate for that occasion: "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helpmeet for him".
Two similar, but less elaborate, post-fanfare German bindings are known on eighteenth-century Endter editions of the Lutherbibel, one sold in these rooms, 25 May 1992, lot 99, the other in the British Library, c.125.k.1, the latter with clasps almost identical to the present binding.
