Catalogue Note
The marriage of Ferdinand II, Grand Duke of Tuscany to Vittoria della Rovere, duchess of Urbino, not a happy one, resulted in the transfer to Florence of the magnificent ducal art collections of Urbino (including Titian's Venus of Urbino and Pietro della Francesca's portrait of Federigo da Montefeltro), but Vittoria's negative influence on the Medici contributed to their eventual downfall. The wedding, however, was celebrated in princely style, including this lavish opera which was staged in the courtyard of Palazzo Pitti in Florence on 8 July 1637.
