Description

  • Two autograph letters signed ("H.Vieuxtemps"), to Jullien and Edouard Wolff, telling him that he has bought a new violin,
to Edouard Wolff, commending his piano etudes and informing him that he was recently bought a new violin [probably a Guarneri], and asking for a copy of Adam's new opera Richard en Palestine, 3 pages, 8vo, integral autograph address-panel, Brussels, 9 November 1844; and to the publisher Jullien in London, describing his current tour of the Orient, his concert in Constantinople, asking about Berlioz and about Jullien's management of the Drury Lane Theatre,  3 pages, 8vo, integral autograph address-panel, Odessa, 11 August 1848 (new style), seal tear with some loss; together with an autograph letter by Bériot, no date

Catalogue Note

The violin that Vieuxtemps refers to in his letter of 1844 is probably the ex-Vieuxtemps, ex-Wilmotte Guarneri del Gesù of circa 1741, which he is known to have acquired at about this time.
