Catalogue Note

The libretto of Friedenstag was originally conceived by Stefan Zweig, and he in fact did much of the working out of the text.  However, when it became impossible for Strauss to continue collaborating with him, the work was officially handed over to Zweig's friend Joseph Gregor.  The scenario was drafted in 1935-1936, and originally intended to be a companion piece to Daphne but the works are now invariably performed separately.
