  • Four autograph letters signed ("Jean Sibelius"), about Scaramouche, Op.71
written to the playwright Poul Knudsen, in Swedish, informing him that he intends to compose the incidental music, giving his proposed title, "Pantomime af Poul Knudsen", with music by Sibelius, insisting that it should not be called an opera, as it will not be composed throughout, later apologizing for not composing music for other pantomimes with Knudsen, including Okon Fuoko, giving as the reason his sad experiences over Scaramouche, 5 pages, 4to (c.28.5 x 22cms), with manuscript English translations, Helsinki and Järvenpää, 13 June 1913, 18 February 1914, 18 September 1917 & 3 January 1922, filing holes, some staining

Catalogue Note

Sibelius's ambitious music for Poul Knudsen's tragic pantomime Scaramouche was written in 1913, but, as these letters testify, Sibelius was disappointed that it could not be staged until much later. It only received its premiere in Copenhagen in 1922.
