Catalogue Note

The Seventh Symphony is a key work by Shostakovich as a Soviet composer; his response to "the sinister events of 1941".  Composed in Leningrad, whilst under siege from Hitler's onslaught, its war-time performances (including some broadcast from the besieged city),  brought Shostakovich an international political fame that transcended the world of music.  Boris Khaikin (1904-1978) became conductor of the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad in 1943. This volume belonged to Khaikin and has come to the present owners by descent.
