Schumann, Robert.
Description
- The autograph manuscript of the unknown and unpublished part-song "Der stolze Gallier", with drafts of other songs and partsongs, including from Liederkreis
This is a newly-discovered song by Schumann. The music of "Der stolze Gallier" is unknown to scholars. This title is listed by Margit McCorkle in her thematic catalogue of Schumann (see below), but not even the musical incipit is recorded: Op.33 (Anhang): "Nicht ermittelt". The part song is apparently set for male voices.

Catalogue Note
The manuscript dates from Robert Schumann's great year of song, 1840, when his ardent love for Clara Wieck inspired a sudden outpouring of over one hundred Lieder and part-songs. He was embroiled in legal action against Clara's father Friedrich Wieck: on 13 February, he had to write a refutation of Wieck's allegations about his debauchery and drunkenness.
The sketch for 'Schöne Wiege' apparently represents a very early stage in the composition of this song from the Heine Liederkreis. There are two bars in the second line which are elided in the final version found in the Leipzig Liederbuch (now the Berlin) and published later that year. For another longer draft of the vocal line of this song, with the words, see the sale in our rooms on 4 December 1998 (Lot 281). That manuscript contained a subsequent revision of the melody found here: one of the bars elided in the final version was retained and one discarded.
