Condition
This painting has never been varnished and may never have been cleaned. In recent years the thin paint layer in the sky developed some slightly warmer, more ochre colored tones that are visible amidst the branches of the tree on the left. These ochre patches were more visible particularly in the sky and in the pale blue of the middle distance of the trees. These stained areas have been re-glazed slightly to add a more cohesive finish to the picture. We are not unhappy with the results and although it is conceivable that the artist in some way had a hand in the retouching, it is more than likely that this is restoration. The re-glazing could presumably be removed, and it could be done to ascertain what the reason for this retouching is, yet the picture is generally in very good state and could also be hung as is.
