Catalogue Note
Michal Rovner uses birds frequently as subject matter. Of what they are symbolic is a bit of a mystery; the artist herself maintains, "I use birds as material, not as symbolism in any clear way." (Whitney retrospective, p. 104) Rovner's first photographs predated the digital revolution and the advent of computers and digital cameras has allowed her increased flexibility when producing images. She equates this flexibility with the nature of birds themselves, always adaptable and in a constant state of change.
Each work is numbered on the gallery label on the reverse: 7/7, 6/7, 1/7, respectively.
