Catalogue Note
The Gulshan-i-Ishq or Rose Garden of Love was composed during the reign of Ali Adil Shah II of Bijapur. It recounts the love story of Prince Manohara and his beloved Princess Madhumalati and is based on the conventions of the Indian romance tradition.
The illustrations from this manuscript, now widely dispersed, epitomize the Deccani style of symmetrical compositions bearing fine detailing and delicate coloring, resulting in harmonious paintings imbued with a dreamlike quality.
