Catalogue Note

This work is from a rare group of paintings that were produced  by Santosh between 1969 and 1971. A comparable example is illustrated in Lalit Kala Contemporary nos. 12 &13, April-September 1971. In this work as with the present lot there is a central 'black window', the artist states "I use the black to suggest an enormous feeling of void. I would like to repeat that my canvas is like a window, a passage to something beyond... I regard the square as a window or a sort of screen to cover the obvious reference, in order to make my intent more suggestive. I do not need to show the Yoni and Linga. The actual sexual union is implicit." (Lalit Kala Contemporary, nos. 12&13, p.20.)

According to the current owner who met Santosh in 1975 this painting is particularly important as it was the first time the artist used the 'black window' in his work.
