Description

Opaque watercolour heightened with gold on paper, laid down on an earlier album page

This illustration follows closely the style of the Mughal artist Govardhan who produced a number of portraits of holy men, dervishes and ascetics, often at the request of Prince Dara Shikoh, who had a keen interest in mysticism. The subject of the holy man and the prince first appeared during Akbar's reign as a reflection of the Emperor's interest and tolerance of other faiths. This illustration has been laid down on an album page from the Farhang-i Jahangiri 1607-8, by the famous French dealer Demotte who remounted a number of manuscript leaves with the same lexicon. This leaf has been enlarged slightly on all four sides to fit into its border.
