Catalogue Note
This illustration painted in the sub-imperial Mughal style depicts Prince Sulaiman Shikoh and his father Prince Dara Shikoh who was the eldest son and heir apparent of Shah Jahan (r.1628-58). Dara Shikoh was defeated twice in battle by his younger brother Aurangzeb (1618-1707), who then seized the throne, imprisoned his father Shah Jahan and executed his brother. Sulaiman then fled to the hills but was later betrayed to Aurangzeb and died in prison in Gwalior in 1662, three years after his father Dara.
