The present work is a preliminary study for the Güstrower Ehrenmal, a memorial for the cathedral in Güstrow, Barlach's birthplace. On the occasion of the cathedral's 700-year anniversary, the church community commissioned the artist to produce a memorial in remembrance of the victims of the First World War.
