Condition

Painted on board, laid down on cradled panel. The board is stable. There are small areas of retouching to all four corners, probably due to previous framing, some scattered pinhead-sized spots of retouching running parallel to the left of the upper edge and some minor scattered specks of retouching towards the centre, all visible under UV light. Apart from some nailhead-sized spots of retouching to the two figures in the foreground and towards the lower centre and some further small specks of retouching towards the lower right corner, also all visible under UV light, this work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note

In 1907, Maurice Denis visited the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore with his wife and children. He then stayed in Venice and it was there that his daughter Madeleine, who had been born in 1906, took her first steps. In the present work, the church of San Giorgio Maggiore is seen from Saint Mark's Square.  All the expressive force of the work lies in the composition, with the arcades giving a sense of depth accentuated by the successive horizontal planes. Denis paints a real-life scene, inspired by the light pouring through the arches and the movement of passers-by and gondolas. The harmonious palette reveals the purity of the evening light and the softness of the water's edge, increasing the work's charm and mystery.
