Catalogue Note

Accompanied by booklets within a leather folder, fitted leather presentation box and outer packaging.

Originally launched in 1911, the Santos model has become one of the icons of Cartier's Tank family of watches.

Though the story of its origins are murky, the watch is said to have been designed in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his friend, legendary Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont, so that the pilot could use a watch without removing his hands from the aircraft controls.

At the time of its release it was one of the first wristwatch models Cartier had put into production.

The present example shows the enduring popularity of the model almost 100 years later.
