Production of reference 2554 began in 1952. To commemorate the beginning of the third millennium, Patek Philippe re-issued the 2554 case design as the reference 5100, known as the Ten-Day.The fluid lines of the design echo that of a manta ray, whose image appears in the reference 5100's promotional material. For examples of Ref. 5100, see lots 162 and 163 in this sale.

The case of this watch was made by Markowski, one of the finest case makers in Geneva. In addition to this model, they were also responsible for the case production of other unusually shaped rectangular watches, including the 'Hour-Glass', Ref. 1593, the 'Top-Hat', Ref. 2480, the 'Tegola', Ref. 2461, and the 'Tegolino', Ref. 425.
